Mantra Meditation


As one’s meditation practice grows deeper, falling into a meditative state becomes ever easier. But for a beginner – and sometimes for a more “advanced” student as well – stopping the constant chatter of the mind can be extremely difficult.

One form of meditation that can go a long way to stop the chatter is mantra meditation. The Sanskrit word mantra (alternative spelling: mantram) literally means “mind tool.” Indeed, it is a most effective tool to help you still your mind.

A mantra meditation involves chanting a single word, a short phrase or a verse rhythmically and repeatedly. Chanting the mantra focuses the mind on the single thought of the mantra, driving out all other thoughts and, especially, stopping the tendency of the mind to jump from thought to thought. After a while, the mind focuses on the rhythm of the chant, transcending the words themselves. The sound of Sanskrit mantras also produce vibrations in the body and the aura that calm the mind and bring a sense of peace...
